With the article of “Improving the quality of Mushroom Spawn is in progress” dated November 19, the activity of Mushroom Spawn production had been reported. It is related to the Mushroom cultivation training which have been organized and conducted in conjunction of Good Earth Japan (GEJ) and Provincial Department of Battambang Province (PDA) for farmers who live on post minefield at Battambang Province, northwest of the Kingdom of Cambodia for them to become independent. The additional information has been reached as below. The production of Mushroom Spawn is under trial by PDA, and they are conducting the germination test of their Spawn at the farmer who participated the Mushroom cultivation training for the quality and volume of yield several times already. And now, PDA have decided to have own cultivation room for facilitating the germination test by themselves and use for the cultivation training just next to the Mushroom Spawn production room. As the result it will become easier germination test in timely manner, can make standard of the test, and will have higher efficiency of the production soon. Sheared rice straws and bean shells are steam fumigated and mixed with nutrient as for the compost Compost had been contacted with spawn and kept with optimum temperature The germination tests have been conducted at farmer places for checking the quality and yield (Mainly straw mushrooms were cultivated at the training and these are used for Chinese dishes often.) The cultivation room is under construction at next to Mushroom Spawn production room

(NEW) Latest report on the third attempt of Adlay cultivation
Further to the second report dated October 13, the new report has reached with the recent situation of the experimental cultivation of Adlay by Good Earth Japan (GEJ) which is conducting at Battambang Province, the kingdom of Cambodia.
This time, the report suggested that Adlay has been growing well comparing to the ones of the last attempt by means of improvement on the selection of seeds, fertilizing and watering.
Although there were time difference of sowing between the field of Mr. Phean in Slappan village and the one of Provincial Department of Agriculture (PDA), the thickness and height of the stems of Adlay are bigger and higher, and they are having many fruits at both fields.
It is required to wait another couple of weeks for finding the exact result of cultivation. There will be some improvement on the yield but it is still unpredictable whether it achieves the expected amount of yield or not.
This experimental cultivation had been requested by Hakubaku Co., Ltd. who produces the grain food in Japan. Farmer Mr. Phean in Slappan village had tried to cultivate Adlay twice since April 2016 upon request of GEJ but the results were less than the expectation. This time, PDA have joined for the experimental cultivation also.

(NEW) Improving the quality of Mushroom Spawn is in progress
The major part of the supporting program for farmers who live on the post mine field at Battambang Province, the Kingdom of Cambodia by Good Earth Japan (GEJ) for them to become independent is the agricultural trainings such as Rice cultivation, Chicken raise, Home vegetable gardening and Mushroom cultivation.
Mushroom cultivation training is the most popular program for the farmers among them as they can get petty cash by selling mushrooms at the market easier than others.
It is very important to get the quality mushroom spawn to succeed the cultivation.
As informed in the article of GEJ’s activities dated August 1, Provincial Department of Agriculture, (PDA), Battambang province had decided and started to produce the quality mushroom spawn with reasonable price for farmers who attend GEJ’s Mushroom cultivation training and others in conjunction with GEJ.
The germination tests have been taken place at the model farm of mushroom cultivation training several times since then.
However, PDA found the result of the test was not satisfactory with about 80% germination ratio comparing to the one of the spores purchased from another province in the past at the time of October so far. Therefore, PDA is accelerating their improvement work as the season of harvesting the rice of which straws shall be used for the mushroom cultivation will come soon and the training will start also. The rice straw is used for the spore bedding.
GEJ hope the quality and inexpensive Mushroom Spawn shall be provided to farmers who have been supported by GEJ soon.

Keep watching the growth Experimental cultivation of Adlay
The activity report concerning to the experimental cultivation of Adlay in Battambang Province, the Kingdom of Cambodia by Good Earth Japan (GEJ) had been carried with the article of “Better luck this time! The third attempt of Adlay cultivation” dated August 24 in this website. Better luck this time! The third attempt of Adlay cultivation.
Now, the recent situation has been received from there as described below.
Although it is unpredictable still, the growth of the Adlay by direct seeding seems acceptable on both field of Mr. Phean in Slappan village and Provincial Department of Agriculture of Battambang Province (PDA) who are consigned for the experimental cultivation. In contrarily, the growth of the Adlay by transplant method is poorer and weaker than the direct seeding method on both fields.
This experimental cultivation had been requested by Hakubaku Co., Ltd. who produces the grain food in Japan. Farmer Mr. Phean in Slappan village had tried to cultivate Adlay twice since April 2016 upon request of GEJ but the result were less than the expectation.
Therefore, the third attempt with better fertilization of the fields, better selection of seed and disinfection have been taking place at the fields of Mr. Phean and PDA. The all possible measures have been considered on this attempt for the satisfactory yield.
Everybody in charge of this project pray for the success.

This village is located the foot of a small mountains near to the man-made lake called Kamping Puoy which was built at the time of Pol Pot regime in Battambang Province.
GEJ started to support farmers of this village in year 2007. However, it had not been offered the real support to this village for these 7 years. GEJ deeply studied the request by the village to come back to support, and have decided to resume by this training.
Mr. Sovanmony, Deputy Director of PDA handed over Chicks 5 chicks each have distributed
I am Man La living this village since 1999. It was the first time for me to participate the training by PDA and GEJ. Have been raising chickens with own ideas from some time ago and have failed many time by losing them by disease etc. Now, I found the correct way to raise chicken through the training. Hoping to be successful in chicken raise with 25 chickens including chicks given through the training, and could gain the petty cash by selling them. Thank you for the support to Anlongsvay village.

Better luck this time! The third attempt of Adlay cultivation
Following the request of Hakubaku Co., Ltd. who produces the grain food in Japan, the experimental cultivation of Adlay by a famer Mr. Phean in Slappan village, Battambang Province, the Kingdom of Cambodia through Good Earth Japan (GEJ) had started in April 2016.
The first attempt was failed as the fruits was empty due to the severe drought there. At the second attempt, it has gotten 16 kilograms of fruits of Adlay which was less yield than expected for the planted acreage. Therefore, Hakubaku Co., Ltd. had been studying the cause of the poor crop and have found out that the poor fertilization of the fields and its control might be the cause. Now, Hakubaku Co., Ltd. have decided to start the third attempt with better fertilization of the fields, better seed selection and disinfection.
This time, Provincial Department of Agriculture (PDA) of Battambang Province which is the counter partner of GEJ for the agriculture training to the farmers who live on the post landmine field to become independent and have worked as an advisor of the Adlay cultivation project will also participate the experimental cultivation of Adlay. The situation of cultivation by PDA shall be informed to Mr. Phean and it shall be reflected his method.

Let’s make our dreams come true! Challenging Mushroom Spawn production.
The challenge to produce the Mushroom Spawn have started at the corner of premises of Provincial Department of Agriculture (PDA) in Battambang City, the Kingdom of Cambodia. PDA is one of partners of Good Earth Japan (GEJ) for supporting farmers at there, and had the intension of producing Mushroom Spawn by themselves for years.
GEJ support farmers who live on the post landmine field for the improvement of their life and for them to become independent. The large part of the support activities is the Agriculture training including Rice cultivation, Chicken raise, Home vegetable gardening and Mushroom cultivation which are very much related to their daily life.
The Mushroom cultivation training had started in 2008 and many farmers participated the training already, and some of them have captured the knowhow of cultivating the Mushroom and can ship their product to the market for earning the petty cash.
However, to achieve the success with Mushroom cultivation, beside of having good Mushroom bed and the good maintenance etc., it is essential to have quality Mushroom Spawn. During past trainings, as it was very difficult to get the quality Spawn within the Province, PDA had to purchase the Spawn from the manufacture of outside of the Province and had distributed them to farmers participated. Consequently, it was extremely difficult for individual farmer to get the quality Spawn by himself in the market.
Therefore, PDA decided to have own facility of producing quality Spawn by themselves for better result of the Mushroom cultivation training and to strengthen the support for farmers to become independent some time ago and had been asking GEJ to cooperate with them for the plan.
GEJ have considered their request very deeply and decided to help the initial cost for preparing the facility from the budget in this term. Meanwhile, GEJ completed its 10th anniversary of supporting farmers there in this March. Then this project of Mushroom Prawn production became the memorial co-work for both GEJ and PDA.
A part of premises of PDA in Battambang City was provided, although there are many issues such as to collect good materials, confirm the function of the inoculation facilities and compile the knowhow etc. to be solved, the construction of the Mushroom Spawn inoculation room was complete recently. As the material and facilities for Mushroom spawning were brought in and staff of the work was employed, the trial of Mushroom Spawn inoculation have been started.
PDA have intention of providing the training course of Mushroom Spawn inoculation to farmers who want to inoculate them themselves in the future too.
GEJ hope the quality and inexpensive Mushroom Spawn shall be provided to farmers who have been supported by GEJ soon.

Wow, fantastic! We do our best too. Home Vegetable Gardening training
On Sunday July 23, 105 farmers from villages of Phnom Khpos, Otakon and Ou Tanhean in Battambang Province, northwest of the Kingdom of Cambodia who participated the Home Vegetable Gardening Training provided by Good Earth Japan (GEJ) and Provincial Department of Agriculture (PDA) have visited a successful vegetable farmer at suburbs of Battambang city.
The successful farmer Mr. Nob Nol started to grow vegetables only with 12 meter x 12 meter land and he became a owner of the large vegetable farm of having 5,000 square meter farmland and continue to harvest vegetables 7 to 8 times per year and ship them to the market.
According to him, the control of soil, quality seed (For dry and rainy seasons) and give the optimum fertilizer and water are essential to have good vegetables. These days, he monitors the market prices and competitiveness for his vegetables.
Farmers were overwhelmed by the size of farming but after listening Mr. Nob’s tale of hard times and getting the knowhow of growing vegetable from him, they were put assured that they can be like Mr. Nob in the future.
The scheduled Home Vegetable Gardening training for 7 villages in Battambang Province which GEJ and PDA provide within this term is almost completed with this event for 3 villages.

We can concentrate into teaching now
The dormitory of teachers of the Primary school at Prahop village in Battambang Province, northwest of Cambodia has been completed.
Due to the poor conditions of road and transport, there was a difficulty to commute teachers from their houses to the school every day. Then, it had been decided teachers to occupy one of the classrooms of school bringing their beds, cookware and other utilities in to the room.
The request by villagers to construct the teacher’s dormitory for opening up the room for school children, and improve the life of teachers for them to concentrate their teaching work had been passed to GEJ since some time ago.
The request had been realized with the fund based on the donation from three companies of Hitachi Construction Machinery Tierra Co., Ltd., Hitachi Construction Machinery Co., Ltd. and Hitachi Construction Machinery Japan Co., Ltd. And construction work had started in April. (Please refer to the article Everybody hope early completion of the dormitory for teachers dated May 8, 2017.)
The construction work went well and it was completed.
It has 4 bed rooms and a small kitchen at the back. There are no electric nor water supply as same as the village houses. The living water shall be depended by rainwater. Teachers will use the toilets of the school.

Now, can avoid the walk in the water
As you may know, in Cambodia, it has very severe weather like in rainy season with flooding and in dry season with drought so often. The villages in Battambang Province where Good Earth Japan (GEJ) support farmers who live on the post landmine field to become independent also have been affected such disasters frequently.
Due to the flooding by small canal along side of the Prey Preal GEJ Primary School in Prey Preal village, the school ground and access path have covered by the water often too. Although some improvement was made on the canal stream, because of the poor drainage, even with the small rain causes those places covered with water still.
As a result, school children were having difficulty for accessing to school building so often too.
Therefore, there was a strong request of assistance to fill up the ground and access path from school master to GEJ from some time ago.
Recently, they had a budget from Government for the cost of filling up which could cover only 15 % of the area, then GEJ decided to bear the cost of the rest of area, and the filling up work was started under supervision of Battambang Provincial Department of Rural Development (PDRD).
School children and teachers are happy with this improvement and thank GEJ.
Russairo Kiesel primary school was the same situation and the filling up work on the ground and access path was done in September last year.

The flood around the gate The ground and path were under the water
Under supervision by PDRD, the survey and filling work were carried out
The filling up was completed in early June

I am proud of that I was appointed as the model farmer.
As reported on May 15 on this website, 2 villages of Andoung Neang and Anlongsvay among 21 villages in Battambang Province in Cambodia where Good Earth Japan (GEJ) support not been offered the real support for these 7 years.
For those 2 villages, GEJ started to carry out the Chicken raise training which is one of the Agriculture training in conjunction with Provincial Department of Agriculture, Battambang (PDA) from this budget term.
To make farmers understand better and keep their interest, it is decided to have Mr. Pheach Lean who lives in Andoung Neang village since year 2011 as the model farmer for this training in this village which 32 farmers participate.
He has been raising chickens in his own way and lost many chicken by diseases before. Since he started to participate the lectures and practices, he has realized his way might be wrong and strongly appealed to continue to receive the sessions.
Therefore, considering his eagerness and agreement of PDA and other participants, GEJ decided him to be the model farmer of this village for the training and presented 20 chicks to him with the hope of villagers.
From now on, his henhouse shall be the place of practical training of how to prepare the best henhouse to prevent chickens from foreign enemy and cruel weather, how to prepare and give good feed, how to give vaccination and other training related to chicken raise accordingly with the growth of chicks.
Mr. Pheach Lean said; Thank you for giving me a chance to challenge. I shall do my best.

Yes. I could do also! Chicken raise training
The Chicken raise training and its follow up training had started in early May this year for 9 villages in Battambang Province, northwest of Cambodia where Good Earth Japan (GEJ) support farmers who live on the post landmine field.
Since then, the trainings scheduled between GEJ and Provincial Department of Agriculture (PDA) has been carrying out here and there accordingly.
In late May and in early June, the instructors of PDA have been visiting villages to instruct how to do the injection and to give eye drops of vaccination to chickens for preventing them from diseases.
Farmers who had been raising chicken with their own way had bitter experience of losing many chickens due to the disease and others. At the sessions, farmers have realized the necessity of such vaccinations to prevent their chicken from diseases.
As farmers did not have any experience of handling those syringe and dropper, they practiced them fearfully.
Let’s hope the chickens grow healthy.
GEJ support farmers who live on the post landmine field to become independent through like this agriculture training, improving living environment, and improvement of infrastructure.

Pumps have been repaired. It makes our daily work easier.
There are 8 Hand Pumps for pumping up water of Pond and/or groundwater at villages of Battambang Province, Cambodia where Good Earth Japan (GEJ) support farmers who live on post landmine field there.
Those pumps had been installed in 2007 or 2008 when GEJ just started the support activities in Cambodia.
Since then, they had been maintained and repaired sometimes for use.
However, because of the wear of valves and/or broken handles etc., the most of Pumps have been not in use for these years, and farmers and school directors have been asking the repair.
For the area, it is essential to have Pond for the drought but the Pump is also important for drawing up the water.
This time, GEJ ordered to repair 7 Pumps either to replace or repair. At the same time, GEJ instructed farmers to improve their handling method of them.

The construction work of the second Good Earth Japan (GEJ) Pond with the size of 30m width x 60m length 4m depth at Bosampor village which is the 31st Pond in Battambang Province, had been in its final stage to complete before the full rainy season to come, and it is almost completed now.
Although the village is located at the southern part of Kamping Puoy manmade lake but it is not enjoying the benefit from it and been having difficulties of water supply.
GEJ constructed a Pond at there last year but because the village is widely spread and big population, it has been requested to have the other one strongly.
The second one was constructed at about 2.5 Km in distance from the first one but villagers are quite happy for the improvement.
The construction work was carried out by Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC) under the supervision of Provincial Department of Rural Development of Battambang Province.

Thank you for coming back to us!
Good Earth Japan (GEJ) support farmers of 21 villages who live on the post minefield in Battambang Province, North West of Cambodia. However, 2 villages of Andoung Neang and Anlongsvay among them had not been offered the real support for these 7 years. The trainings of Rice cultivation, Frog raising and bag Mushroom cultivation in 2009 and 2010 for the farmers of Andoung Neang village was the last. Both villages and Bung Sangke village which is newly added for the support have started to receive the Chicken raise training which are the one of Agriculture trainings which GEJ and Provincial Department of Agriculture (PDA) provide. Recently, GEJ received the thanks message from the village chief of Andoung Neang village. Village chief I am Mr. Soun Buncham living in Andoung Neang village since 1997 moved from Sangke district, Battambang Province. I have been appointed as the village chief of this village in 2002 and since then I was working with agriculture as same as the other farmers in the village. I had experienced to receive the training of GEJ in 2009 and 2010 for Rice cultivation, Frog raising, and Bag mushroom. In case of Frog raising and Bag mushroom cultivation, farmers could not continue to work them because of difficulty of finding the material for them around the village , and stopped. This year, GEJ came back to train farmers of this village again, and 47 farmers of young and others newly moved in to the village started to participate the Chicken raise training. (Please refer to the article of dated April 11, “Checking their spirit and knowledge level at first” of this WEB site.) Myself was used to raise the chickens with the traditional way but it was not successful, and lost over 100 chickens by disease in last year for example. Through a few time training already received, new method of chicken raise that all the farmers in this village never thought including how to make the chicken feed and use of the medicine when chicken get disease etc. shall be very effective, I think. We hope that we will succeed with chicken raising for improve our life in this year. We have a very good luck of that GEJ came back to this village which still need the support. On behalf of the villagers, thank to GEJ for the support. We will do our best. GEJ support farmers who live on the post minefield to become independent through like this agriculture training, improving living environment, and improvement of infrastructure.
