(NEW) Many farmers renewed their determination.    Agriculture training

At the end of August, more than 150 farmers who had been attending the Agriculture training provided by Good Earth Japan (GEJ) to support farmers who live on post mine field in Battambang Province, North West of the Kingdom of Cambodia have visited two successful farmers in agriculture at Sangker district in the same province.
This short trip was planned and organized by GEJ in conjunction with the counter partner of GEJ, Provincial Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fishery (PDAFF) in Battambang, who has been training farmers actually.
It was for commemorating the completion and reviewing of both courses of Home Vegetable Gardening and Rice Cultivation.

Although within the same province, as very rarely go for out of villages, it was a good incentive for them to study harder.

Two farmers who received the farmers were trained by PDAFF before.

Pond is drying up       Vegetable gardening training

Various vegetables are growing as the positive result of Vegetable gardening training at villages on post landmine field, Battambang Province, northwest of the Kingdom of Cambodia where Good Earth Japan extend the support together with Provincial Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (PDAFF) of Battambang.
The training for the first year and follow up courses for farmers of 5 villages had started in early May. Since then, several sessions had been held for how to prepare the good compost, watering method, pest control method and others with lectures and practices. In early June, after the session of practicing sowing, various kinds of vegetable seeds had been distributed to the attendants.
After practicing sowing, famers sowed the seeds individually, and vegetables were growing without any trouble. One of the farmers participated could sell his surplus product in market nearby.

However, due to the no rain for more than 10 days, these places have been experiencing the drought and those vegetable were start affected of short of water.
Farmers are worrying about this situation deeply now.
Let’s hope to have the optimum rain.

Looking forward to having the school opened     New Primary School

The construction work of the Primary School at Ou Takorng village which had started in early April this year has been almost finishing.
There was an incident of the basement parts of building under construction had been submerged. However, the work was progressing well since then, and it has completed recently. The study desk and chairs were brought in to individual class rooms, and it became the stage of clearing and leveling the surroundings area and the field.

As the handover ceremony is scheduled in early October and the official opening of the school shall be on November 1st at the time of the semester start, the detailed preparation is continuing.

At Ou Takorng village in Battambang Province, northwest of the Kingdom of Cambodia where the post landmine field and Good Earth Japan (GEJ) extend the support have no Primary school. Therefore, over 160 school-age children are forced to commute to schools in other villages nearby diversified. The nearest school from the village is located about 3 kilometer in distance and it takes about one hour for child by walking. GEJ had been receiving the strong request for building the primary school at Ou Takorng village since some time ago. After deep consideration, GEJ decided to build the school with own fund for this year.
This school shall be the 5th school which GEJ build in this country.

School-age children in Ou Takorng village are looking forward to having their school opened soon.

Thank you! Long-awaited bridge has completed.   Korsvay village

In the morning of July 18, Korsvay village in Battambang Province, northwest of the Kingdom of Cambodia, rain since last night was stopped, and the gathering of celebration and pray of safety for newly built bridge (3 passes culverts) and 330m earth road have been taken place.
The bridge and road were constructed by Good Earth Japan (GEJ) upon the strong request from the village and it was decided to construct as one of supporting schemes for farmers who live on the post landmine field in Cambodia for them to have better life and to become independent. The construction work had commenced in late April and have completed recently.
As they were long –awaited bridge and road, villagers and children were very happy and expressed their thanks.

It’s our pleasure of helping other farmers  Chicken raise training

On June 28, 61 farmers of Dangkot Thnong village and Ou Ta Ngiemh village who had been attending Chicken raise training(first year) among 9 villages in the area of which Good Earth Japan (GEJ) provided the trainings for this year to them have visited three selected farmers in Boeng Sangkae village.
This visit has organized for participants to visit successful farmers in Chicken raise for them to study the way for raising chicken in real and encourage them to put effort in it at the final stage training.
In the past, the visit was organized for visiting successful farmers outside of Battambang Province as it could not find the suitable succeeded farmer in the province. But this year, farmers have visited 3 farmers in province who had attended the trainings organized by GEJ in conjunction with Provincial Department of Agriculture and forestry and fisheries (PDAFF) in Battambang, and had left the outstanding achievement in raising Chickens in the same province.

Farmers visited this time have listened the explanation of how to raise Chickens with bitter experience from those farmers carefully and have inspected their facilities freely. As those 3 farmers were like neighbors, they have realized that to have a successful achievement is not a dream but in real.

Furthermore, those 3 farmers who hosted the visitors were very delighted and were proud of having such visitors at their farms.

Have planted rice together         Rice cultivation training

As the rice seedlings which were sown in the middle of June at Boeng Prei village have grown for the transplanting, attendance of the Rice cultivation training have practiced the planting of them to the rice paddy together.
After irrigating water to the rice paddy, farmers have formed a line and planted rice seedlings one by one.
It was like traditional seedling method of Japan in some time ago.

The main product of this village as well as the neighboring village Peak Sbaek was sesame seeds but they had been requesting GEJ to conduct the Rice cultivation training to increase the rice since some time ago.
GEJ had evaluated the request and its feasibility, and had decided to include the course in the Agriculture training programs for this year and the first session had taken place in early June.

Compiling the studies          Chicken raise training

Both the first year and the follow up trainings of Chicken raise trainings for nine villages which were started in April in Battambang Province, northwest of the Kingdom of Cambodia where post landmine field and Good Earth Japan (GEJ) extend the support are getting completion stage. Ten sessions for the first year training and seven sessions for the follow up training were taken place.
At the end of June, villages had gatherings of chicks hand over to farmers who attended the session well and for them to practice the things learnt during the courses.

This Chicken raise training is one of Agriculture trainings which GEJ together with counter partner, Provincial Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in Battambang (PDAFF), provide to farmers for them to become independent and to get petty cash.

Farmers studied and practiced about how to prepare the good feed, good henhouse and how to prevent chickens from disease etc., and they were instructed to practice themselves with chicks handed this time over.
They are very eager to increase the number of chickens with their experience.

The earth road has changed to Laterite pavement    Bosampor village

The 1.2 Km length earth road at Bosampor village, Battambang Province, the Kingdom of Cambodia where post landmine field and Good Earth Japan (GEJ) extend the support has changed to Laterite pavement for improving the hardness and drainage.
When the completion check, GEJ representative encountered a couple of road shoulders were incomplete. He asked to the contractor to take immediate measure for it and the failed parts were recovered.

As it was earth road before, the road had become very muddy causing farmers face difficulties to pass it when it was rain.
Now farmers and their children are very pleased to the improvement of road for living, working and commuting to school etc., and expressed the sincere thank to GEJ.

Hands-on training of rice seeds sowing   Rice cultivation training

In middle of June, at villages of Peak Sbaek and Boeng Prei in Battambang Province, the Kingdom of Cambodia where the post landmine field and the villages Good Earth Japan (GEJ) extend the support , the eighth session of Rice cultivation trainings have been held.

At Boeng Prei village, after practiced good seeds selection for seed rice which had been taught in previous session, the hands-on training of preparing nursery for raising of seedling, and actual sowing have been performed.
According to the farmers who participated the session, it was the first experience for them to practice the sowing with nursery since they had been sowing directly to their rice field before. In addition, they felt that the volume of seed rice used this time was lot less than the direct sowing.

At Peak Sbaek village, due to the delay of preparation of nursery practice, the lecture of how to raise the seedlings by the staff of Provincial Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (PDAFF) of Battambang province have been conducted this time.

Please wait a little while, Children. Otakon village Primary School

The construction work of New Primary school at Otakon village in Battambang Province, northwest of the Kingdom of Cambodia where the post landmine field and Good Earth Japan (GEJ) extend the support become the stage of roofing.
Over 160 school-age children who commute in different Primary Schools at different villages are eagerly waiting the completion of the new school.
The construction work had started in April. The specification of the school meets with the Government directories. Therefore, it is sure of that the application from the village to Education department of Battambang Province for appointing and dispatching school teachers should be accepted without any problems.
Everybody including GEJ is praying for getting excellent teachers soon.

The work is progressing

The replacement work of bridge at Korsvay village in Battambang Province, northwest of the Kingdom of Cambodia where the post landmine field of which informed in Activities report dated May 25 is progressing well.

In the end of May, there was very heavy rain over night, and the river rose suddenly causing the suspension of work once. However, thanks to the weather recovery after it, the preparation work of concrete filling for the bridge girder is almost completed now.

The villagers of Korsvay village have been visiting the work site one after another for confirming the progress every day.

Let’s practice sowing        Vegetable gardening training

The Vegetable gardening training for this year had started in late April for 6 villages (First year and follow up trainings ) where post land mine field in Battambang Province, northwest of the Kingdom of Cambodia.
At the end of May, Villagers of Chirok and Bosampor were given the instruction of how to sow the seed properly and how to prepare the Organic fertilizer by staffs of Provincial Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fishery (PDAFF) of Battambang Province and GEJ staff.
Although farmers had some knowledge of farming which learnt after the civil war in the country but it was in their own style. Therefore, most of the participants said that they realized the instructions given during the training were new for them and very effective.

Rice cultivation training has started

As reported in the article of “Considerate instruction for new comers” dated May 8, Good Earth Japan (GEJ) had received so many candidates of participation to Rice cultivation training from two villages of Peak Sbaek and Boeng Prei in the northwest of the Kingdom of Cambodia.
As it exceeded the capacity and budget of the trainings, GEJ and Provincial Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fishery (PDAFF) had worked hard to determine the participants for the trainings together.
Considering the strong eagerness of farmers, and PDAFF agreed to share some cost and to dispatch additional instructors, both decided to take 50 and 74 each of farmers from the villages.

Recently, instructors of PDAFF and representative of GEJ have started to conduct the first session of trainings. This time, the instruction of how to select good quality seed rice and how to prepare sowing bed with on hands trainings were given.

Everybody play for increase of quality crops of rice successfully.

The bridge shall be replaced with the stronger Culvert

New bridge at Korsvay village in the area of post mine field in Battambang Province, northwest of the Kingdom of Cambodia is under construction. The work is for replacing the existing old bridge which was very old and difficult for farm tractors to pass on it to the concrete made triple culvert.

The bridge is placed on the river in between the Main road and the village, and as it is very old and shaky, the replacement was the strong desire of villagers for some times.
As the need of replacement became very crucial, especially it was very difficult and danger to pass by the shallow part of the river in rainy season instead of passing on the bridge, the village strongly asked to Good Earth of Japan (GEJ) for the support to replace it at the same time of rehabilitation work of the earth road between Main road and the bridge.
GEJ deeply considered the request together with PDRD (Provincial Department of Rural Development) in Battambang Province who is the counter partner of GEJ, and have decided to replace it with fund from this year’s budget.

We can expect smiling faces of farmers and children who use the bridge soon.

A busy day for Mr. Kok Tra     Mushroom cultivation training

In the middle of May, farmer, Mr. Kok Tra who live in Bosampor village, Battambang Province, northwest of the Kingdom of Cambodia had spent a very busy day for receiving many visitors to his place.
The participants of Mushroom cultivation trainings which Good Earth Japan provide for farmers who live on the post mine field for their life improvement and for them to become independent had visited him to see his facilities and to listen his experience.
This time, over 80 farmers from villages of Anlongsvay, Andoung Neang and Boeng Sangke who received 9 sessions of trainings since February and have reached the final stage of the course, have visited a successful farmer with Mushroom cultivation within the same province.

Mr. Kok Tra himself was a participant of the same training course before and had studied hard with sprit of challenge, and had become one of the successful farmer with the cultivation in the area.

Farmers who attended have commented that the explanation of Mr. Kok Tra was very real and easy, and his facilities were very simple. They realized that it was not a dream but could be achieved by them accordingly.

The Vegetable gardening trainings have started.
On both days of May 8 and 10, staff of Provincial Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fishery (PDAFF) in Battambang and Good Earth Japan (GEJ) had visited around the villages for conducting Vegetable gardening trainings.
GEJ support farmers who live on post mine field in Battambang Province, northwest of the Kingdom of Cambodia for improve their living life and to become independent with activities of improvement of infrastructure and Agriculture trainings in conjunction with counter partner PDAFF.

Vegetable gardening training is one of Agriculture trainings like Rice cultivation, Mushroom cultivation and Chicken raise training which GEJ provide, and it could be their income source selling those products at the market if there would be surplus and the quality should be marketable.

Steady activities are starting to bear fruit   Chicken raise training

One of the major activities of Good Earth Japan (GEJ) to support farmers who live on post land mine field in the Kingdom of Cambodia for the improvement of their living and for them to become independent is Agriculture trainings.
Not only the restoration work of farm lands and agriculture environment which were devastated during civil war, but trainings of the lost know how on cultivation method of agricultural products for farmers are the very important work for GEJ in conjunction with Provincial Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in Battambang (PDAFF).
Chicken raise training is the very important Agriculture training as well as other trainings like Rice cultivation, Mushroom cultivation and Vegetable gardening which GEJ provide.

Now, many farmers are studying and practicing hard to become the successor of Chicken farming remaking themselves from the old and own methods, and those efforts are starting to bear small fruit. Although it is very few cases still, a few farmers are mentioning that their living life becoming better.

Recently, GEJ received the messages of thanks from farmers who had started to participate the Chicken raise training in Boeng Sangke village from last year, and would like to share them with you as shown below.

Two ponds are complete

Good Earth Japan (GEJ) construct pond to secure water for living and agriculture use of farmers who live on the post mine field in the Kingdom of Cambodia as one of the supporting activities of improving their living environment.
GEJ planned to construct three ponds within this year. One each of Pond for villages of Boeng Sangke and Andoung Neang among them has completed recently and those are waiting for to be filled up to capacity.
As mentioned, water of the Pond is very useful for farmers nearby especially at the time of draught in dry season. Furthermore, it will help children who shall be asked to get water for domestic animals frequently.

In case of Boeng Sangke village, villagers were chipped in a small money to install the fence around the new pond to prevent animals come in the water’s edge and damage the shoulder of the pond. This trend would contribute to have sense of public spirit and self-reliance, GEJ thinks.

The construction work had been started in early April. At the beginning, because of the rain, it has progressing slowly but catching up well in these days. Now it became the stage of laying bricks for the walls. The work shall be completed around August time and children are eagerly waiting for it.

Considerate instruction for new comers   Rice cultivation training

The detailed explanation of policy and the way of Rice cultivation training, and to collect the application for the participation of the training have been carried out for farmers of two villages of Boeng Prei and Peak Sbaek to be supported by Good Earth Japan (GEJ) from this year newly.
50 and 70 farmers each have attended the meeting and applied for the participation. Because of the limited capacity of training classes, those applications should be studied carefully and should be decided who can participate later.
Those villages had been requesting GEJ to conduct the Rice cultivation training for increasing the crops since some time ago. GEJ evaluated the request and its feasibility, and decided to include in the Agriculture training program for this year.
As the meetings were the first time, farmers were tensioned. However, GEJ hoped they would accustom with the way of training soon and the crops would increase accordingly.

Participants listen seriously     Chicken raise training

In the end of April, at villages in Battambang Province, northwest of the Kingdom of Cambodia where Good Earth Japan (GEJ) support farmers who live on the post land mine field, the third Follow Up training of Chicken Raise training have been conducted.
The trainings had taken place for 7 villages this year. Instructors of Provincial Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in Battambang (PDAFF) who is the counter partner of GEJ were very busy for visiting those villages.
This time, the trainings were concentrating to explain Advantages of having Chicken house, how to prepare the good food and how to vaccinate.
As to raise Chickens is comparatively light work, there were many female trainee participated.
They were very eager to increase the number of Chickens for their house use of eggs and meat, and to ship Chickens to market for selling to get petty cash.

Had inspected condition and experienced the activities in detail

In this month, Mr. Fujii, Chairman of Good Earth Japan (GEJ) has visited the villages in Battambang Province, northwest of the Kingdom of Cambodia where GEJ support farmers who live on the post mine field for them to become independent.
It was his first and a short visit but he had interacted with farmers and children directly, and had interchanged opinions with staffs of GEJ’s counter partners.
Under the very hot climate there, he had inspected the real situation of villages and conditions of infrastructure of there , and recognized the role of support activities and their performance.
The visit was very beneficial for him to consider the future projects in right way.

The weather has improved     Kasumigaura Marathon

April 15, Sunday, the day of The 28th Kasumigaura Marathon and International blind people Marathon which was held at Tsuchiura and Kasumigaura Cities, Ibaraki Prefecture has started with bad weather of heavy rain and strong wind.
However, thanks to the improvement of the weather, it has become calm with only light rain before ten o’clock when the Full marathon would start. The condition for the runners was improved greatly.
Although the bad weather, more than 16,500 runners participated for them to complete their run and set a new record.

Good Earth Japan (GEJ) participated to the event setting up a booth for promoting the support activities for the farmers who live on the post minefield in the Kingdom of Cambodia, and for collecting the fund and for inviting to join the support members.
In the beginning, because of the weather condition, there was fear of lesser spectators. But there were many visitors dropped in to GEJ’s booth, and some of them kindly have donated in collection box still.
Thank you for your donation. The donation shall be used effectively.

New employees have listen the lecture of GEJ’s activities carefully

On both days of April 4 and 10, GEJ’s support activities in the Kingdom of Cambodia has been explained to New employees of Hitachi Construction Machinery Co., Ltd. (HCM) and the group companies at its Kasumigaura Institute.
New employees were very keen to know those activities and have listen the lecture very carefully.
There were some employees who felt the sympathy on the support activities for farmers who live on the post landmine field there, and have signed up for the support member of GEJ immediately after the lecture.
GEJ thanked to those New employees who showed interest on our lecture, and HCM which gave us such opportunity.

The work has started.    Road construction at Korsvay village

One of the support activities of Good Earth Japan (GEJ) for farmers who live on the post landmine field has commenced.
From Korsvay village, there was a strong request on the improvement of wooden Bridge in their village and access road connect the village to the Main road nearby. After the deep consideration, GEJ decided to work on the both for the improvement of infrastructure of farmers with the budget of 2018 finally.
Firstly, the 330 m length of earth road construction connecting the Bridge and Main road has commenced.

Let’s increase the number of Chickens Chicken raise training

The first session of Chicken raise follow up training for farmers at villages in Battambang Province, northwest of the Kingdom of Cambodia has been taken place here and there.
The Chicken raise training is one of Agriculture trainings organized and provided by Good Earth Japan (GEJ) for the farmers who live on the post mine field for them to become independent.

Now, it’s time to plant actually Mushroom cultivation training

Almost 3 weeks has passed since Mushroom cultivation training which is one of the support programs of Good Earth Japan (GEJ) for farmers who live on post landmine field in northwest of the Kingdom of Cambodia started.
During the time, farmers have learnt how to prepare the Spawn beds with Rice straws for both of in field and in vinyl house cultivation methods, and how to make the compost which consist of Rice Straws and Shells of Beans, and the water solution of Coconut Sugar, Urea and Lime by lectures and practices.
Now, it’s time to plant and grow the mushrooms.
Farmers were taught that in case of in Vinyl house cultivation method, it is necessary to fumigate the Spawn beds with steam produced by boiling water in Drum for killing various kinds of bacteria before plant Mushroom Spawn.

This time, the quality Mushroom spawns produced at Mushroom Spawn production facility at Provincial Department of Agriculture (PDA) in Battambang City have been supplied to farmers. The production facility had been completed in August last year and various improvements on the quality had been done since them, and the targeted quality has been achieved recently. Our dream will come true!    Okun chraun!(Thank you very much!)

The village meeting place at Otakon village, Battambang Province, north west of the Kingdom of Cambodia where Good Earth Japan (GEJ) support farmers and their family who live on the post mine field has been filled with the voice of joy.
Even the village has over 160 school-age children, there is no Primary school in there. Then, children are forced to commute to schools in other villages nearby diversified. In case of the nearest school at Russairo village is located about 3 kilometer distance. It is very hard for children especially under the very hot sun and/or heavy rain.

The request of building the Primary school to local government office had been sent several times but it was not realized.
Therefore, the village had been requesting it to GEJ since three years ago.
GEJ have been working out with other NPO for the possibility of joint work, and also have looked for the Sponsor to build the Primary school but they were not realized.
After the deep consideration, GEJ suggested to the board of directors to build it with own fund, and it was accepted as one of the major activities in term of 2018 finally.

Practicing with neighbors      Mushroom Cultivation Training

After the first session of March 6, the practical training of producing Mushroom bed and compost have been taken place at each villages.
Following the instruction at the previous session by staffs of Provincial Department of Agriculture (PDA) and Good Earth Japan (GEJ), farmers had secured enough Rice straws which are essential for Mushroom cultivation.

Rice straws were soaked in water and were soften by stamping by feet, and they were shaped like straw bags to be placed as mushroom bed for the outdoor growing.
The compost prepared consisted of Rice Straws and Shells of Beans, and the water solution of Coconut Sugar, Urea and Lime. The compost shall be spread on the Mushroom bed together with Mushroom spawn.

Let’s start the preparation      Mushroom cultivation training

Under the very strong sunshine in the dry season at villages of Battambang Province northwest of the Kingdom of Cambodia, farmers gathered at their assembly hall and/or at the shade of the tree.
On March 6, the first follow up and the trainings of Mushroom cultivation training which are planned for year 2018 by Good Earth Japan (GEJ) have been taken place.
The Mushroom cultivation training is one of the series of agriculture trainings which GEJ provide for farmers who live in the area of post landmine field to become independent economically.
