(NEW) It’s started. Mushroom cultivation training

After harvested the rice, the gathering of farmers for explaining the plan of Mushroom cultivation training in 2017 were held at villages around the post landmine field in Battambang Province, Cambodia where Good Earth Japan (GEJ) extend help.
The Mushroom cultivation training is one of the series of agriculture trainings which GEJ provide for farmers who live in the area to become independent economically.
The Rice Straws is absolutely necessary for thriving bed of Mushroom but around this time of season, farmers tend to burn them as the fertilizer to their field.
Therefore, it is very important to organize the training and follow up sessions explaining the importance of Rice Straws to be saved.

The sessions were held at villages of Dangkok Thnong, Chirok, Bosampor, Otakon and Phnon Khpos by instructors of PDA (Provincial Department of Agriculture, Battambang) together with GEJ staff in Cambodia.
Mushroom cultivation training is well accepted and have many participants as it is not necessary to invest much and if you are very keen and work hard, it may become one of the good income products. (Please refer to the article of “The new plan of Mr. Kok Tra" dated March 2nd.)

Overview of sessions
Although under very hot condition of 35 to 40 Degree Celsius in the daytime, farmers were listening the explanation very hard. Some of farmers already secured the Rice straws.

(NEW) Ambition of Mr. Kok Tra

Mr. Kok Tra of Bosampor village in Battambang Province of Cambodia had started to attend the Agriculture Training which were organized and conducted for the farmers who live on the post minefield by Good Earth Japan (GEJ) in conjunction with Provincial Department of Agriculture of Battambang Province (PDA) from 2015.
At first, he attended the Rice cultivation training year before and Mushroom cultivation training last year. As he was very keen to study and practice on the training always, he achieved better result than others on both courses. (Please refer to the old article of “Please look at. So many Mushrooms grown!” dated April 4, 2016.)
This year, he will attend the follow up training of Mushroom cultivation training which shall be commenced very soon.
Beside, as his harvesting result of Mushroom and income from it were so good, he decided to expand his Mushroom cultivation facility for even bigger yield. In addition of his old vinyl house for cultivation, he is building a new vinyl house which is two to three times bigger than the old one.
Furthermore, considering the efficiency for fumigation of the bed of Mushroom Spores, he has built the furnace of steam water. He believe that he can achieve his target with good quality Spores.

GEJ hope that his new project shall be successful and will keep eyes on it together with PDA.
GEJ support farmers who live on the post minefield to become independent through like this agriculture training, improving living environment, and improvement of infrastructure.

Will do our best to raise chickens successfully

After the excursion visit to the successful farmer of Chicken Raise, in Chrabveal village near Battambang City on December 28, in last year by 40 farmers from Otakon and Prahop villages who were attending the Chicken Raise Training organized by Good Earth Japan (GEJ) and Provincial Department of Agriculture, Battambang Province (PDA), as reported on January 6, the distribution of young chickens and chicks to those framers as for the prize of full attendance was taken place on January 20.

The training lessons of how to make the hen house, how to prepare the good feed, the method of vaccination and others were carried out during the training period in house and at field, and the all program for Chicken raise training was finished by this distribution.

Chickens are the one of important income sources of farmers if it shall be well grown to marketable as well as their food of protein-rich. GEJ hope that chicks shall be brought up well and increase their numbers.

Mr. Hai Ngy had moved in to Otakon village in 2005, and he had been attending the training courses of Rice cultivation, Mushroom cultivation and Chicken raise for three years.
Before attending the Chicken raise training, he had a bitter experience of he lost many chickens by disease. However, since he received the Chicken raise training course by GEJ and PDA, he could raise them without big trouble, he could ship 50 chickens and earn about 280 US dollars in recent months as the result.

Chicken raise training is the one of GEJ’s Agricultural Training Program for farmers who live on the post minefield to become independent. As this training for two villagers were finished, the Agricultural Training Program of GEJ for this financial year was completed accordingly.

Following the request of Hakubaku Co., Ltd. who produces the grain food in Japan, GEJ had started the experimental cultivation of Adlay at a famer Mr. Phean in Slappan village, Battambang Province. The first attempt started from April, 2016 was a failure because of the insides of Adlay fruits were empty due to the exceptional drought in Cambodia. Therefore, GEJ made sure of every steps of cultivation having fine contact with Mr. Phean. As it was covered with water when the flood, GEJ had worried about poor crops but finally it could reach the threshing work and had gotten the fruits weighed about 16 Kgs.
Now, Hakubaku Co., Ltd. will decide whether it can be feasible to start its larger scale cultivation or not by studying the quality, harvested amount and others of Adlay fruits in detail.

In cooperation with PDA (Provincial Department of Agriculture) in Battambang Province in Cambodia, GEJ support farmers who live on the post-mined field to become independent through the Agricultural Training including Rice growing, Mushroom cultivation, Chicken raise and backyard vegetable gardening. GEJ is also challenging to cultivate the Adlay which could be the new income source for farmers there.

A day trip for training was held

On December 28 last year, about 40 farmers from Otakon and Prahop villages who were attending the Chicken Raise Training organized by Good Earth Japan(GEJ) and Provincial Department of Agriculture, Battambang Province(PDA) have made a excursion visit to a successful farmer of Chicken Raise, Mr. Eurn Sareun, in Chrabveal village near Battambang City. It was an hour and half one way trip by cars to the village.
The farmers listen the story of many hardships of Mr. Eurn in the past and inspected the every corner of the chicken farm.
Especially, the full scale, wide and clean chicken farm with hatching facility of eggs was interested and breathtaking.
Mr. Eurn started to raise 10 chicks in 2007 studying the method of how to raise them on his own, and gradually expanded his business overcoming numerous troubles. Now, he ships chickens to the market in Battambang City and is earning approximately US$250 per month from it.
According to him, keeping the hen house clean always, give the fresh water and the nutritious feed to chicken are essential for success.
Farmers realized the importance to follow the 5S (“Seiri (Sorting out)”, “Seiton (Setting in order)”, “Seisou (Cleaning)”, “Seiketsu (Cleanliness)”, “Shitsuke (Discipline)”) too.

One of the participants from Prahop village, Mr. So Phath had tried to raise chicken several times before attending the training course but all the time chickens had dead by diseases and others. He, now, is very eager to do another attempt for success following the all instruction given during the training course.

Had some rain!! Rice cultivation training

On August 29, GEJ reported that the severe drought was experienced in June and July this year in Cambodia.
Although there was some rain in August, it was not enough for rice cultivation still. Especially, it was reported that the area of Banan and Bavel District in Battambang Province where many of villages with support of GEJ after demining were located, the most of Rice Field were dried up, and it should be expected the poor crops this year.

Since then, there was some rain in the area.
When the follow up training on September 16 at Bosampor village in Banan district which was organized by PDA (Provincial Department of Agriculture) and GEJ confirmed that although some of Rice field had been affected by the drought still but some were recovering from it and rice was growing well.
Furthermore, it was evident that the in lines planting which GEJ trained for more crops was better growing than the traditional direct sowing.
The follow up training of this time was concentrated in to the frequent checking on water, weeding and the measurement on diseases/harmful insects by lecture and practice.

GEJ continue to monitor the situation with the special attention in those areas.

・Killing Field
Today is the first day of activities in Cambodia.
At first, have visited the Killing Field where the bodies of mass slaughter were thrown in to ditches and dips at the time of the civil war.
It was the true evidence of massacre as the negative inheritance.
Tour member offered the burning incense stick and flowers at the Memorial Tower which was full of human bones.

According to the instruction, people who were sentenced to death transported from Tuol Sleng Prison to here and been massacred with every kind of killing methods.
There was a tree called Killing Tree which beat babies to kill by hands still remain. It was so sad that the executers were children too.
At the exhibition hall, watched the movie about the massacre.
