Now, can avoid the walk in the water

As you may know, in Cambodia, it has very severe weather like in rainy season with flooding and in dry season with drought so often. The villages in Battambang Province where Good Earth Japan (GEJ) support farmers who live on the post landmine field to become independent also have been affected such disasters frequently.
Due to the flooding by small canal along side of the Prey Preal GEJ Primary School in Prey Preal village, the school ground and access path have covered by the water often too.
Although some improvement was made on the canal stream, because of the poor drainage, even with the small rain causes those places covered with water still. As a result, school children were having difficulty for accessing to school building so often too.
Therefore, there was a strong request of assistance to fill up the ground and access path from school master to GEJ from some time ago.

Recently, they had a budget from Government for the cost of filling up which could cover only 15 % of the area, then GEJ decided to bear the cost of the rest of area, and the filling up work was started under supervision of Battambang Provincial Department of Rural Development (PDRD).

School children and teachers are happy with this improvement and thank GEJ.

Russairo Kiesel primary school was the same situation and the filling up work on the ground and access path was done in September last year.

As reported on May 15 on this website, 2 villages of Andoung Neang and Anlongsvay among 21 villages in Battambang Province in Cambodia where Good Earth Japan (GEJ) support not been offered the real support for these 7 years.
For those 2 villages, GEJ started to carry out the Chicken raise training which is one of the Agriculture training in conjunction with Provincial Department of Agriculture, Battambang (PDA) from this budget term.

To make farmers understand better and keep their interest, it is decided to have Mr. Pheach Lean who lives in Andoung Neang village since year 2011 as the model farmer for this training in this village which 32 farmers participate.
He has been raising chickens in his own way and lost many chicken by diseases before. Since he started to participate the lectures and practices, he has realized his way might be wrong and strongly appealed to continue to receive the sessions.
Therefore, considering his eagerness and agreement of PDA and other participants, GEJ decided him to be the model farmer of this village for the training and presented 20 chicks to him with the hope of villagers.
From now on, his henhouse shall be the place of practical training of how to prepare the best henhouse to prevent chickens from foreign enemy and cruel weather, how to prepare and give good feed, how to give vaccination and other training related to chicken raise accordingly with the growth of chicks.

Mr. Pheach Lean said; Thank you for giving me a chance to challenge. I shall do my best.

Yes. I could do also! Chicken raise training

The Chicken raise training and its follow up training had started in early May this year for 9 villages in Battambang Province, northwest of Cambodia where Good Earth Japan (GEJ) support farmers who live on the post landmine field.
Since then, the trainings scheduled between GEJ and Provincial Department of Agriculture (PDA) has been carrying out here and there accordingly.
In late May and in early June, the instructors of PDA have been visiting villages to instruct how to do the injection and to give eye drops of vaccination to chickens for preventing them from diseases.
Farmers who had been raising chicken with their own way had bitter experience of losing many chickens due to the disease and others. At the sessions, farmers have realized the necessity of such vaccinations to prevent their chicken from diseases.
As farmers did not have any experience of handling those syringe and dropper, they practiced them fearfully.

Let’s hope the chickens grow healthy.

Pumps have been repaired. It makes our daily work easier.

There are 8 Hand Pumps for pumping up water of Pond and/or groundwater at villages of Battambang Province, Cambodia where Good Earth Japan (GEJ) support farmers who live on post landmine field there.
Those pumps had been installed in 2007 or 2008 when GEJ just started the support activities in Cambodia.
Since then, they had been maintained and repaired sometimes for use. However, because of the wear of valves and/or broken handles etc., the most of Pumps have been not in use for these years, and farmers and school directors have been asking the repair.
For the area, it is essential to have Pond for the drought but the Pump is also important for drawing up the water.
This time, GEJ ordered to repair 7 Pumps either to replace or repair. At the same time, GEJ instructed farmers to improve their handling method of them.

Thank you for coming back to us!

Good Earth Japan (GEJ) support farmers of 21 villages who live on the post minefield in Battambang Province, North West of Cambodia.
However, 2 villages of Andoung Neang and Anlongsvay among them had not been offered the real support for these 7 years.
The trainings of Rice cultivation, Frog raising and bag Mushroom cultivation in 2009 and 2010 for the farmers of Andoung Neang village was the last.

Both villages and Bung Sangke village which is newly added for the support have started to receive the Chicken raise training which are the one of Agriculture trainings which GEJ and Provincial Department of Agriculture (PDA) provide.
Recently, GEJ received the thanks message from the village chief of Andoung Neang village.

Village chief

I am Mr. Soun Buncham living in Andoung Neang village since 1997 moved from Sangke district, Battambang Province.
I have been appointed as the village chief of this village in 2002 and since then I was working with agriculture as same as the other farmers in the village.

I had experienced to receive the training of GEJ in 2009 and 2010 for Rice cultivation, Frog raising, and Bag mushroom. In case of Frog raising and Bag mushroom cultivation, farmers could not continue to work them because of difficulty of finding the material for them around the village , and stopped.
This year, GEJ came back to train farmers of this village again, and 47 farmers of young and others newly moved in to the village started to participate the Chicken raise training. (Please refer to the article of dated April 11, “Checking their spirit and knowledge level at first” of this WEB site.)

Myself was used to raise the chickens with the traditional way but it was not successful, and lost over 100 chickens by disease in last year for example.
Through a few time training already received, new method of chicken raise that all the farmers in this village never thought including how to make the chicken feed and use of the medicine when chicken get disease etc. shall be very effective, I think.

We hope that we will succeed with chicken raising for improve our life in this year.
We have a very good luck of that GEJ came back to this village which still need the support.
On behalf of the villagers, thank to GEJ for the support. We will do our best.

It’s started. Mushroom cultivation training

After harvested the rice, the gathering of farmers for explaining the plan of Mushroom cultivation training in 2017 were held at villages around the post landmine field in Battambang Province, Cambodia where Good Earth Japan (GEJ) extend help.
The Mushroom cultivation training is one of the series of agriculture trainings which GEJ provide for farmers who live in the area to become independent economically.
The Rice Straws is absolutely necessary for thriving bed of Mushroom but around this time of season, farmers tend to burn them as the fertilizer to their field.
Therefore, it is very important to organize the training and follow up sessions explaining the importance of Rice Straws to be saved.

The sessions were held at villages of Dangkok Thnong, Chirok, Bosampor, Otakon and Phnon Khpos by instructors of PDA (Provincial Department of Agriculture, Battambang) together with GEJ staff in Cambodia.
Mushroom cultivation training is well accepted and have many participants as it is not necessary to invest much and if you are very keen and work hard, it may become one of the good income products. (Please refer to the article of “The new plan of Mr. Kok Tra" dated March 2nd.)

Overview of sessions
Although under very hot condition of 35 to 40 Degree Celsius in the daytime, farmers were listening the explanation very hard. Some of farmers already secured the Rice straws.

Ambition of Mr. Kok Tra

Mr. Kok Tra of Bosampor village in Battambang Province of Cambodia had started to attend the Agriculture Training which were organized and conducted for the farmers who live on the post minefield by Good Earth Japan (GEJ) in conjunction with Provincial Department of Agriculture of Battambang Province (PDA) from 2015.
At first, he attended the Rice cultivation training year before and Mushroom cultivation training last year. As he was very keen to study and practice on the training always, he achieved better result than others on both courses. (Please refer to the old article of “Please look at. So many Mushrooms grown!” dated April 4, 2016.)
This year, he will attend the follow up training of Mushroom cultivation training which shall be commenced very soon.
Beside, as his harvesting result of Mushroom and income from it were so good, he decided to expand his Mushroom cultivation facility for even bigger yield. In addition of his old vinyl house for cultivation, he is building a new vinyl house which is two to three times bigger than the old one.
Furthermore, considering the efficiency for fumigation of the bed of Mushroom Spores, he has built the furnace of steam water. He believe that he can achieve his target with good quality Spores.

GEJ hope that his new project shall be successful and will keep eyes on it together with PDA.

Will do our best to raise chickens successfully

After the excursion visit to the successful farmer of Chicken Raise, in Chrabveal village near Battambang City on December 28, in last year by 40 farmers from Otakon and Prahop villages who were attending the Chicken Raise Training organized by Good Earth Japan (GEJ) and Provincial Department of Agriculture, Battambang Province (PDA), as reported on January 6, the distribution of young chickens and chicks to those framers as for the prize of full attendance was taken place on January 20.

The training lessons of how to make the hen house, how to prepare the good feed, the method of vaccination and others were carried out during the training period in house and at field, and the all program for Chicken raise training was finished by this distribution.

Chickens are the one of important income sources of farmers if it shall be well grown to marketable as well as their food of protein-rich. GEJ hope that chicks shall be brought up well and increase their numbers.

Mr. Hai Ngy had moved in to Otakon village in 2005, and he had been attending the training courses of Rice cultivation, Mushroom cultivation and Chicken raise for three years.
Before attending the Chicken raise training, he had a bitter experience of he lost many chickens by disease. However, since he received the Chicken raise training course by GEJ and PDA, he could raise them without big trouble, he could ship 50 chickens and earn about 280 US dollars in recent months as the result.

Chicken raise training is the one of GEJ’s Agricultural Training Program for farmers who live on the post minefield to become independent. As this training for two villagers were finished, the Agricultural Training Program of GEJ for this financial year was completed accordingly.

Adlay have gotten the fruits

The progress reports of the second attempt of Adlay cultivation had been issued a couple of times since sowing with the seed of it on September 6, 2016. Thanks to your pray for success, the Adlay grown good since then and threshing work was completed after harvesting and drying it successfully.

Following the request of Hakubaku Co., Ltd. who produces the grain food in Japan, GEJ had started the experimental cultivation of Adlay at a famer Mr. Phean in Slappan village, Battambang Province. The first attempt started from April, 2016 was a failure because of the insides of Adlay fruits were empty due to the exceptional drought in Cambodia. Therefore, GEJ made sure of every steps of cultivation having fine contact with Mr. Phean. As it was covered with water when the flood, GEJ had worried about poor crops but finally it could reach the threshing work and had gotten the fruits weighed about 16 Kgs.
Now, Hakubaku Co., Ltd. will decide whether it can be feasible to start its larger scale cultivation or not by studying the quality, harvested amount and others of Adlay fruits in detail.

In cooperation with PDA (Provincial Department of Agriculture) in Battambang Province in Cambodia, GEJ support farmers who live on the post-mined field to become independent through the Agricultural Training including Rice growing, Mushroom cultivation, Chicken raise and backyard vegetable gardening. GEJ is also challenging to cultivate the Adlay which could be the new income source for farmers there.

A day trip for training was held

On December 28 last year, about 40 farmers from Otakon and Prahop villages who were attending the Chicken Raise Training organized by Good Earth Japan(GEJ) and Provincial Department of Agriculture, Battambang Province(PDA) have made a excursion visit to a successful farmer of Chicken Raise, Mr. Eurn Sareun, in Chrabveal village near Battambang City. It was an hour and half one way trip by cars to the village.
The farmers listen the story of many hardships of Mr. Eurn in the past and inspected the every corner of the chicken farm.
Especially, the full scale, wide and clean chicken farm with hatching facility of eggs was interested and breathtaking.
Mr. Eurn started to raise 10 chicks in 2007 studying the method of how to raise them on his own, and gradually expanded his business overcoming numerous troubles. Now, he ships chickens to the market in Battambang City and is earning approximately US$250 per month from it.
According to him, keeping the hen house clean always, give the fresh water and the nutritious feed to chicken are essential for success.
Farmers realized the importance to follow the 5S (“Seiri (Sorting out)”, “Seiton (Setting in order)”, “Seisou (Cleaning)”, “Seiketsu (Cleanliness)”, “Shitsuke (Discipline)”) too.

One of the participants from Prahop village, Mr. So Phath had tried to raise chicken several times before attending the training course but all the time chickens had dead by diseases and others. He, now, is very eager to do another attempt for success following the all instruction given during the training course.
